• Lead controls engineer or solo controls engineer on no fewer than 19 turbines in new installation or controls retrofit including many oddball and first of breed projects that no other engineers were comfortable taking.
• Quickly solved I/O, wiring, and controller problems while participating with completion of Start-Up Reports, mechanical inspections and performance testing.
• Performed dozens of service calls at various power plants, refineries, and paper mills too numerous to list here. Service work covered everything from 650MW main line steam turbines to aeroderivative engines and involved a good mix of GE Speedtronic Mark V, Mark VI, and Woodward governor systems.
• International travel to Southeast Asia, South America, Europe, Northern Africa, and the former USSR.

• As a Start-up team member, assisted in commissioning of one GE medium steam turbine and new Balance of Plant systems associated with the turbine.
• Performed calibrations, loop checks, functional testing and verification of control applications.  Assisted with verification of Start-Up Reports and other documentation.
• Worked closely with GE representatives in troubleshooting an “on-the-fly” HMI upgrade.
• As a side note, I would later do a service call at this site during my employment with PenPower.

• Worked solo as the liaison between the instrumentation construction and start-up teams while reporting directly to the Electrical Construction Manager.  Plant consisted of two Siemens combustion turbines in a combined cycle configuration with one steamer.

• Performed service calls and headed minor commissioning projects on Woodward governors for all manner of applications from 350HP paper line drives to 1MW emergency diesel gensets to 600MW Westinghouse steam turbine generators and nearly every conceivable application in-between.
• Commissioned or performed service calls on the 2301, 505, 501,503, 509, NetCon F/T, MicroNet simplex, and MicroNet TMR model governors.  Also commissioned DSLC load controllers, Protech 203 overspeed protection systems and serviced a wide variety of third party control equipment, as customer needs required.
• Worked extensively with Woodward’s proprietary GAP programming language.

• Calibrated and loop shot every instrument at the Koch project in Venice.  Completed my duties ahead of schedule giving me enough free time to work with Woodward personnel commissioning the governor installed during this capital improvement project.
• Promoted to Foreman on the Nalco project and spearheaded the creation of a coherent tracking system to document progress of instrumentation related construction activities.

• Responsibilities included installation and maintenance of gas wellhead control systems and associated remote telemetry units.
• Worked as a team with plant maintenance personnel to complete what had been described as one year’s worth of backlogged work orders in less than three months.

Cargill corn milling facility in Blair, NE (Fru-Con)

• Maintained existing and installed new instrumentation, motors, VFDs, and MCC buckets.  Primary area of responsibility was the Mill including Corn Storage and Feed Load-out.  The Mill contained the most difficult applications in the plant.
• Worked extensively with uncommon instruments such as Krohne Mass and Mag-Flow meters, radar and capacitive level transmitters.

Woodward 501 to MarkVI retrofit on an LM2500 generator drive originally packaged by Stuart and Stevenson.  Authored the interconnection list and ordered materials accordingly on site in the midst of demolition activities.  Authored various software changes and reconfigured the Modbus communications link for increased data transmission speeds.  Mark VI / Intellution HMI  Still very little Spanish.

Installed and checked out software modifications on two Woodward Netcon 5000 control systems governing the ships GE LM2500 aero-derivative engines.  No HMI.  Cable remote interface and Woodward MonitorGAP only.

Mark V/<I> on a 7E combined cycle unit.  Tracked down various diagnostic alarms and nuisance trips and eliminated the root cause.  Performed Field Modification of TTRF calculation to remedy violent swings in gas splitter valve reference during fired shutdown of the unit.

Frame 7F with MarkV/ <I> controls.  Implemented various TILs and restarted the units.

Tuned the valve curves on a GE 650MW mainline steam turbine.  Resuscitated an Intellution HMI after a total hard drive failure.  Advised the customer concerning controls modifications they were considering during the next planned outage on one of their Westinghouse Steam Turbines.  Woodward Micronet TMR/Intellution HMI/MonitorGAP.

Reset Woodward 501 Governor after power loss to facilitate restarting this Dresser-Rand Steam Turbine/Generator set.  Performed “post-mortem” analysis of unit trip that occurred shortly after going to “Island Mode” in preparation for a hurricane.  Advised customer concerning the order in which they should shed load next time they anticipate an orderly disconnection from the Utility Grid.

Commissioning of five Woodward Atlas Governors with iFix HMIs controlling Nicolaev-Mashprayeva aeroderivatives driving Sumy-Frunze Compressors.  The control system for this natural gas compressor station was engineered by GE GCS in Bracknell, UK from start to finish inclusive of turbine/compressor controls with anti-surge, the overall station control and load balancing between the units (also with a Woodward Atlas), sub-system station control with two GE Versamax PLCs and fire control panels by Kidde Italia.  Very little Russian and virtually no Turkmen, Uzbek, or Ukrainian language skills.  All critical work and virtually all work onsite was executed with the assistance of Russian language translators.
